Do you know about the haitian heritage month ?

If you’re a Caribbean fanatic, you probably have heard about the #haitianheritagemonth. But what does it mean concretely ?

The Haitian Heritage Month was first celebrated in Boston in 1998, but has evolved since then into a national celebration in the US, but also for every Haitian worldwide.

Due to its everlasting evolution, countless shows, art exhibitions, conferences and panels are held during this time. Since the haitian culture is being celebrated, the food, the art, the music and even the history of Haiti are in the center of every attraction. Events like the “ Little Haiti Book Festival” or “Sounds of Little Haiti” are very popular and gather people willing to learn more about the island and its very unique culture. However, the most important event of this month is the 3-days festival in Palm beach county, Florida for haitian flag day, where Caribbeans travel all across the country to celebrate and show some #haitianpride.

In Haiti however, the Haitian Heritage Month is a vague concept. Although celebration goes on the whole month, it’s deeply rooted to the haitian culture and history. Days like May 1st, 20 or 18 are days of commemoration where the population is invited to reflect on the historic event and spend time with their family and friends rather than partying. But with social media #haitianheritagemonth has now spread beyond the united states borders and is evolving into a viral concept dedicated to spread the haitian culture using the hashtag : #haitianheritagemonth

Do you think haitian heritage month should be celebrated also in other countries of the caribbean ?

Caribbeanfully yours
